Drei antike Stücke für Klavier was commissioned by the University of North Carolina at Asheville Department of Music. Each of the three movements were strictly composed using the 12-tone technique, and each uses its own 12-tone matrix. At the beginning of each movement the Prime form of the row is clearly stated. Beyond that, multiple row-forms are used simultaneously either in counterpoint or to form vertical sonorities. Drei antike Stücke is dedicated to Dr. Horace J. Maxile, Jr.
